My Swimmer Taught Me an Important Lesson

Posted on Oct 30, 2017 12:34:02 PM by Heather Haugen in Kids Swimming Lessons, in LIfe Skills, in Swimming lessons, in Life Lessons, in SwimLabs

Swimming is a life skill but I found out swimmers, and parents, can learn much more during swimming lessons than just how to swim!

As a parent, I am often pleasantly surprised at how much I learn from my kids as they journey through life. It is a rewarding, messy, heartwarming, exciting, exhausting, wild ride! And sometimes it is all of those in one day.

SwimLabs Science: An Interview with Swimlabs co-founder, Mike Mann

Swimming Questions: Answered

I had a few questions for SwimLabs co-founder, Mike Mann. What better litmus test for swim success than a tried and true veteran? He is a Colorado native who started swimming at the age of six, going on to play Water Polo and swim at the University of New Mexico where he earned his business degree at the Robert Anderson School of Business. Mike continues to participate in Masters Swimming and Water Polo and has earned All American status in both sports. Mike has participated in numerous open water swims, Maui to Lanai open water relay, Trans Tahoe relay race, 5K Big Shoulders Chicago, 13K Galway Bay Swim Ireland, and the 2.4 Rueter-Hess race. Mike currently owns 11 world records in Master swimming and was twice awarded World Master Swimmer of the Year in 2009 and 2010. Mike still coaches masters swimming and insists his success is attributable to his lovely wife of 30+ years Ann and his three beautiful daughters.

Swimming: More Than Just a Life Skill

Posted on Sep 27, 2017 12:16:30 PM by Matt Nadel in Swimming, in LIfe Skills, in success, in SwimLabs, in Swimming Community, in competitive swimming

As a 2-year old in swim lessons, I made sure that everyone at the Denver Jewish Community Center knew that I hated the water. In fact, I screamed so loudly that my parents were asked to leave and were refunded the full amount. I know this seems strange coming from a now Aquatics Director but luckily my parents persisted. By the time I was 5-years-old I had graduated from water wings and was allowed to swim in the deep end of the pool. Swimming only got better as I joined my neighborhood summer team, and I knew from a young age that swimming was special and something different.

When talking with sprinters, you will hear them describe swimming and racing as if they were art enthusiasts speaking about the Mona Lisa. They can describe every nuance of their race, down to the smallest movement or detail.

The important thing to know about sprinting is that there is not just one way to sprint. However, the best sprinters in the world are able to hone in on that style, under extreme circumstances and pressure.

With so many variations in styles and approaches to the splash and dash, I wanted to share three key factors that help me achieve success under pressure:

Celebrate National Water Safety Month in May

Posted on May 14, 2017 11:10:21 AM by jennymann in Swimming, in Swim school, in Swim, in training, in General, in SwimLabs Sandy, in swimmer, in technique

CELEBRATE NATIONAL WATER SAFETY MONTH IN MAY!

Not only does May offer longer days with more sunshine and warmer temps, but this is also National Water Safety Month! This is a topic we are passionate about, as the staff at SwimLabs is devoted to teaching swimmers in a successful, innovative and fun environment to learn swimming correctly, safely and confidently.

In Utah, drowning is the 3rd leading cause of injury-related deaths for children between the ages of 1-14. According to the State of Utah, child drowning deaths typically fall into one of three patterns:

  • Toddlers (Age 1-4) who are unsupervised and wander away from family
  • Teens swimming in reservoirs or lakes with friends or family
  • Infants left unattended in bathtubs

In declaring May Water Safety Month in Utah, Governor Gary Herbert noted that although swimming and aquatic activities contribute to physical and mental health while enhancing the quality of life for Utah residents, it is vital residents understand the essential role Water Safety plays in prevention of drowning and recreational aquatic-related injuries.

Water Safety Tips by the International Swimming Hall of Fame include:

  • Teaching children water safety and swimming skills early
  • Briefing child-sitters and guardians on water safety and adult supervision
  • Appointment of a designated monitor to watch over children at social gatherings
  • Keep rescue equipment, CPR instructions and a first-aid kit poolside
  • Installation of 4-sided isolation fencing surrounding pool (at minimum 5 feet tall) equipped with self-closing, self-latching gates to prevent direct access from home and yard
  • Never use floatation devices as substitution for supervision
  • Don’t assume you’ll hear someone who is struggling in the water. Drowning is a silent death where often there is no splashing or struggling to alert the individual is in trouble

SwimLabs offers a variety of learn-to-swim lessons including Parent Tot specialized instruction, kids group and private lessons and Adult Learn-To-Swim lessons.

Contact us online, email us at sandyinfo@swimlabs.com or call 801-553-7172 to book a lesson and start your summer off safely!

SwimLabs Sandy is excited to announce our 2017 Summer Schedule, running from June 1 through August 31. This summer, we’ve increased classes for each level of instruction and added private-lesson pool times.

Utah swimmers of all ages and abilities will benefit from cutting-edge technology and personalized instruction at our state-of-the-art Sandy, Utah Training Center. 2017 Summer programs include:

Private Lesson Packages –  Private, semi-private, three-person private and four-person private lessons provide a personal, accelerated learning environment with flexible scheduling and allow for instructor requests.

SwimJams–  SwimJams sessions are four consecutive days of swim lessons designed to function as an introduction to SwimLabs and our specialized swimming progression. This is a perfect way for beginner swimmers to continue building their swimming technique. SwimJams is also a great refresher, jump start, or “camp” for swimmers during the summer and holiday breaks.

TeamPrep – TeamPrep intensely focuses on all four strokes for age group swimmers. We offer two different programs: one for freestyle and backstroke, and one for breaststroke and butterfly. This four-day program includes video analysis. TeamPrep classes are 45-minutes with a 3:1 ratio. For this program, swimmers must be 7 to 12 years old, have swim team experience and know all the strokes proficiently. TeamPrep classes run June-August only.

Our summer schedule will fill quickly – book your private lesson or program by visiting SwimLabs Sandy’s website at www.swimlabs.com/sandy or calling us at 801-553-7172.

The Five Best Exercises to do Before Training

Most of us swimmers know that when it comes to practice, if you’re not early, you’re late. Arriving early gives you the time you need to fix your goggles, put your cap on and catch up with your teammates. Most of us do some half hearted stretches and stare somewhat nervously at the blue abyss of the water (let’s be honest, we’re swimmers but we hate ACTUALLY getting in), but what if we could use that time to set ourselves up for a more successful practice? SwimLabs sat down with Avatus Stone, Director of Explosive Performance, one of the biggest sports performance training companies in the country, to find out how to maximize the time we have on deck before diving in.

Freestyle—it’s the foundation of swimming and usually serves as the base of most of our training. It can sometimes seem easy to learn because we practice it so much.
