Swimming Lessons for Babies

At SwimLabs, we believe in teaching kids to swim so they are safer...faster. There are so many benefits to early swimming instruction and baby aquatics even though your little one might not even be walking yet! Did you know that drowning is the leading cause of accidental death in children under 4 and that swimming lessons can reduce the risk of drowning by 88%? With that in mind, we cannot stress enough the importance of getting your child enrolled in lessons as early as 6-months-old. The earlier you get a child in water, the less fear and apprehension they will develop towards the water.

Swimming also improves confidence in other ways, too. Infant and toddler swimming lessons include water play, fun songs, toys and close contact with mom, dad or another trusted caregiver. Our small warm-water pools create the perfect supportive and social group environment that encourages self-confidence and joy of learning a new skill.

When your little one learns how to swim with us, they will be building a foundation of swim skills that will help them transition to lessons without parents. Infant swimming lessons are a great start to teaching your child how to love and respect the water.

When should we start baby or toddler swimming lessons?

We offer two types of swimming lesson programs for kiddos under the age of 3, ParentTot and Toddler Transition classes. These group classes are designed for parents and infants or toddlers to work together to develop the foundational skills crucial for learning to swim and promoting water safety. We start lessons as early as 6-months-old and will work with you and your little one to learn skills such as being comfortable in the water, breath control, floating and kicking. All of these skills will help your child begin building foundation water safety skills and confidence in the water.

What are Infant Swimming Resource (ISR) or survival float lessons?

We are sometimes asked what ISR lessons are and if we teach infant survival float or self rescue. Water safety skills are our first priority for all swimmers. We believe swimmers need to develop swim skills that not only allow them to float, but also move themselves to safety as confident, efficient swimmers. Having a correct, efficient swim stroke enables swimmers to move themselves out of potentially dangerous situations. Our curriculum does not include the ISR philosophy.

The ISR philosophy promotes “self-rescue” swimming skills with various methods of instruction based on the child’s age. For example, survival swimming for babies might include learning how to roll onto their backs to rest through repeated exposure of being forced underwater. While we can all agree that learning to float is an important water safety skill, we differ in our approach to teaching infant aquatics.(And, industry swimming experts have yet to prove that the ISR method is a more effective teaching approach.)

Our philosophy in teaching water safety skills includes an environment where all swimmers learn to love and respect the water while learning fundamental swim skills. At SwimLabs, we believe that you can’t effectively teach traumatized kiddos who fear water. Before enrolling in an  ISR program  or other toddler survival swimming programs, we urge you to do extensive research to determine if they are the right fit for your child.

Our innovative water safety curriculum

Our curriculum has been developed by a team of world class swimmers with over 30 years of teaching experience. We have the most up-to-date swimming technique to teach students how to swim the correct way right from the beginning! Starting with foundational water safety skills such as breath control, floating and comfort in the water is a core part of our swimming lessons for toddlers and babies. In addition to teaching water safety to every swimmer, our goal is to teach confidence in the water that will translate to all parts of your swimmer's life.

At SwimLabs, we know kids learn best by seeing, and that's exactly how we teach toddler swimming lessons. Using instant video feedback, mirrors on the bottom of the pool, and other innovative technologies, we help young swimmers learn and apply the best swimming techniques, so they can quickly gain the skills they need to be safer in the water.
